There\u2019s nothing<\/em> like Carnival Season which attracts the most beautiful women in the world; gyals who stop the world in flawlessly feathered costumes<\/a> during daysss-long celebrations from Mardi Gras<\/a> to the famed Trinidad Carnival.<\/p>\n

The electric pre-Lenten season is known for vibrant parades, elaborate balls, and color-splashed masquerades, typically running from Epiphany (January 6) to Fat Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday).<\/p>\n

Widely regarded as the premier Carnival experience, Trinidad Carnival started as an act of rebellion against both slavery and capitalism, according to Brandeis University scholar Savita Maharaj<\/a> for the\u00a0Early Caribbean Digital Archive<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Cannes Br\u00fbl\u00e9es was the ceremonial act of burning sugar cane by enslaved Africans which, at one point, was so controversial that a British royal commission attempted to\u00a0outlaw it\u00a0in 1881, sparking the\u00a0Canboulay riots. <\/p>\n

Faced with new restrictions, the islands\u2019 free Black residents (who\u2019d been emancipated from slavery in 1838) elevated their celebrations, replacing stick-fighting with bamboo instruments and later\u00a0steel pan\u00a0drums.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy banning Cannes Br\u00fbl\u00e9es, [the British] were trying to silence [formerly] enslaved people,\u201d Maharaj told\u00a0Smithsonian\u00a0<\/em>magazine<\/a>. \u201cBut in that silencing, they failed, because Carnival is both culture and resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Now, 144 years later, the revolutionary movement continues to bring cultures together for a massive celebration rooted in unity, resilience, and joy.<\/p>\n
