{"id":6435,"date":"2026-03-27T14:07:49","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T14:07:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/westcoastaftershock.com\/wca\/2026\/03\/us-votes-against-un-resolution-labeling-slavery-crime-against-humanity\/"},"modified":"2026-03-27T14:07:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T14:07:49","slug":"us-votes-against-un-resolution-labeling-slavery-crime-against-humanity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/westcoastaftershock.com\/wca\/2026\/03\/us-votes-against-un-resolution-labeling-slavery-crime-against-humanity\/","title":{"rendered":"Far From Shocking: US Votes Against UN Resolution Labeling Chattel Slavery \u2018Gravest Crime Against Humanity\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/newsone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2026\/03\/17745467899122.jpg?w=1024&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=80\" alt=\"ETHIOPIA-AFRICA-AU-DIPLOMACY\" class=\"wp-image-6854195\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: MARCO SIMONCELLI \/ Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Wednesday, the United Nations (U.N.) voted on a resolution introduced by Ghana calling the trans-Atlantic slave trade the \u201cgravest crime against humanity.\u201d With the exceptions of Argentina, Israel and, <em>shocker,<\/em> the United States, 123 nations voted in favor of the resolution.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/25\/world\/africa\/un-slave-trade-vote-us-ghana-israel.html\">According to the New York Times<\/a>, the resolution also calls on the U.N.\u2019s member nations to formally apologize for slavery and contribute to a reparations fund as \u201ca concrete step towards remedying historical wrongs.\u201d Ghana\u2019s President John Mahama specifically called out the Trump administration\u2019s attempts to whitewash the horrors of slavery before the resolution went to a vote. Mahama called the resolution \u201ca safeguard against forgetting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the first steps President Donald Trump took upon taking office last year was signing an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/03\/restoring-truth-and-sanity-to-american-history\/\">executive order<\/a> explicitly designed to change how history is taught in national museums and parks. Upon signing the order, Trump said that the Smithsonian Institution focused too much on \u201chow bad Slavery was\u201d and not enough on America\u2019s \u201cbrightness.\u201d In the year since he signed the order, the U.S. government has tried to remove <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/newsone.com\/6791551\/trump-wants-forget-george-washington-was-enslaver\/\">exhibits teaching about slavery<\/a> from national parks and museums, while also reinstalling toppled<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/newsone.com\/6359594\/albert-pike-confederate-statue-trump-to-restore\/\"> Confederate monuments.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So teaching about slavery is bad, but celebrating those who fought to maintain it is totally fine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dan Negrea, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/usun.usmission.gov\/explanation-of-vote-for-unga-resolution\/\">issued a statement<\/a> explaining why the U.S. voted no on the resolution. \u201cThe United States has defined, long-standing objections to the framing of \u2018reparatory justice\u2019 and the \u2018duty of reparation\u2019 for historical wrongs,\u201d Negrea wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs stated at the outset of these negotiations, the United States also strongly objects to the resolution\u2019s attempt to rank crimes against humanity in any type of hierarchy. The assertion that some crimes against humanity are less severe than others objectively diminishes the suffering of countless victims and survivors of other atrocities throughout history.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Negrea closed by pushing back on the notion that President Trump doesn\u2019t care about Black people. \u201cPresident Trump has done more for Black Americans than any other president,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s working tirelessly to deliver for them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I mean, he\u2019s certainly delivered higher prices<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/newsone.com\/6853568\/gas-prices-what-triple-digit-oil-prices-mean-for-you\/\"> for gas and food<\/a>, made<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/newsone.com\/6584019\/aca-open-enrollment-reveals-drastic-increase-in-monthly-premiums-nationwide\/\"> health care more expensive<\/a>, made it <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/newsone.com\/5944996\/black-academic-institutions-under-threat-department-of-education\/\">harder for Black students<\/a> to get into good schools, and<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-endangerment-finding-poor-minority-environmental-justice-55d9679f4a21855d1b1b8da100f99f78\"> lifted environmental regulations<\/a> that were designed to protect low-income Black communities. Honestly, I would prefer it if Trump delivered a little less to the Black community at this point.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2026\/mar\/25\/un-votes-slave-trade-gravest-crime-against-humanity-reparatory-justice\">The Guardian reports<\/a> that, in addition to three no votes, there were 52 abstentions, including the UK and EU members.
