Jack Harlow<\/a> is getting dragged for saying he got \u201cBlacker\u201d to switch up his sound with what fans are calling \u201cRemmick\u201d R&B. Social media is in shambles over the hilarious list of \u201cProud Boyz II Men\u201d monickers for the Monica<\/em> rapper.<\/p>\n

After finding success with hits like \u201cFirst Class\u201d and \u201cLovin On Me,\u201d the perplexing pivot raised questions about whether he avoided the pitfalls of culture vultures or followed in their footsteps. In an interview with The New York Times<\/a><\/em>\u2019\u00a0Popcast<\/em>\u00a0podcast<\/a>, he explained the shift by saying his music became \u201cBlacker\u201d based on his love for Black music. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt certainly made what I already wanted to do even more appealing. I love Black music. I love the sound of Black music, and of course I\u2019m hyper aware of the politics of today, that safer landing spot that a lot of my white contemporaries have found,\u201d Harlow said in response to comparisons to white artists MGK, Post Malone, and Jelly Roll who rebranded with Country and Rock.<\/p>\n

In the hour-long interview, Harlow reflects on his love of timeless music like Stevie Wonder and Sade that isn\u2019t about his \u201cego\u201d as much as universal themes and stories. Even from the production mix, he\u2019s intentional about blending into the live band as just another instrument. Now, the rapper says he graduated from the \u201cschool of Drake\u201d and lost interest in \u201cmimicry\u201d to \u201cfocus on artistry.\u201d<\/p>\n
