As a key voice within the formidable\u00a0Flavor Unit, he carried the kind of calm confidence and lyrical precision that defined hip-hop\u2019s late-\u201980s rise. His debut,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/chill-rob-g-ride-the-rhythm-album\/\"><strong><i>Ride the Rhythm<\/i><\/strong><\/a><\/span>, produced alongside\u00a0The (late) 45 King, landed like a statement\u2014clean rhyme patterns, heavy drums, and no wasted motion on the mic.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Around the same moment, the worldwide breakout of \u201cThe Power\u201d placed Rob G in the center of one of rap\u2019s earliest industry controversies, a chapter that reflected both the genre\u2019s sudden global reach and the complicated realities that followed. I\u2019ve got to say rest in power to Albee Alb, Jimmy Mack, and Prince Shabazz. They were the first dudes I personally knew who made a rap record. Shout-out to DJ Stanger. A dude named Brisko, who used to play bass for\u00a0Kool &#038; the Gang, took them to the studio and made that happen. The record never came out, but we were all hyped just the same.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">There were a few rap crews in Jersey City: the Demon Crew, the Tranquilizing 3, and the Royal Rap Crew, which was my squad. There were others too. It was kind of like\u00a0The Warriors, but we didn\u2019t beat each other up all the time. It was mostly trying to out-hustle each other\u2014rapping was part of it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We were out there breakdancing and writing our names on stuff. Everybody was B-boys and Five Percenters. At the same time, we were trying to avoid the flood of crack and cocaine that hit right before my senior year. We started watching the havoc and chaos breaking out because of it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It was everywhere\u2014crackheads were everywhere. People you thought had their heads on straight would suddenly be speed-walking around at all hours for days in a daze, looking for more drugs. You could see someone go from a decent, professional presentation to a shifty fiend in less than two months.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I remember a bus driver I knew personally pulling his loaded bus up to the crack spot. He left eight to twelve passengers sitting there while he went to get his rocks. Then he came back and started smoking while driving.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">That kind of foolishness, along with the positive energy I grew up with from family and friends, influenced what I would rap about.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Being part of the\u00a0Flavor Unit\u00a0\u2014 did it feel like family or history?<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It really felt like we were all on this mission together. We expected to prevail because the talent was there, the confidence was high, and we had each other\u2019s backs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">You weren\u2019t dealing with just one of us at any time. We would spit each other\u2019s bars. We sat around writing rhymes, cracking jokes, and making videos.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We knew\u00a0The 45 King\u00a0was the plug, and we could supply the product. I guess we were a group of friends who liked putting each other in the spotlight.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It seems like we recorded a lot of freestyle sessions that I never heard again. While everything was happening, you might stop and think that a moment or event might be remembered later. But honestly, we weren\u2019t really thinking about history at the time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/chill-rob-g-ride-the-rhythm-album\/\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Ride the Rhythm<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>\u00a0is still a classic \u2014 what made that album last?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I had the gift of na\u00efvet\u00e9. I came into the game with a pure heart. I never considered the possibility that I wouldn\u2019t deliver the best records I could. I knew if I did that, I\u2019d be fine.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">People had been telling me I was good for a long time, way before I met Mark, so that was the battery in my back.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Mark and I had very similar ideas about what the beats and rhymes should sound like. He would go into the crates and throw something on. If I liked it, he might loop it, or he\u2019d find something with a similar tempo and feel that was even better.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">My engineer for the album was John Dimmick. He told me he was in a rock group and had never really listened to rap before. The mission was to convert him to hip-hop.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I think it worked.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It was an exciting adventure\u2014you only get one \u201cfirst time.\u201d Making that album was a lot of dope firsts for me. I became a music publisher, a registered songwriter, and a recording artist. I flew in a helicopter, heard my voice on the radio, and saw myself on TV.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It all started with\u00a0<i>Ride the Rhythm<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When you first heard\u00a0Snap!\u00a0use \u201cThe Power,\u201d what ran through your mind?<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"fv_ytplayer_bcf172d02b05503917ea8baaa588f652\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"900\" height=\"435\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nm6DO_7px1I?origin=https%3A%2F%2Frapindustry.com%2Fchill-rob-g-golden-era-reign-interview%2F\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I honestly thought it would be over within a few months\u2014maybe a couple of years at most. It was such an obvious crime happening in front of the entire listening public. How could they possibly be allowed to continue?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It was confusing that no police showed up at\u00a0Arista Records\u00a0to tell them to stop stealing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">My situation was as bad as\u00a0Milli Vanilli\u2019s. I thought it was a little worse because I was an artist signed to a label, not just a songwriter making demos or reference tracks.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">They took a song that was already on the market\u2014\u201dLet the Words Flow\u201d\u2014remixed it, repackaged it, and sold it as new. Then they brought in some unknown guy claiming to be the artist.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I had heard stories about labels stealing Black music decades ago and having white artists re-record it without credit or compensation to the originators. Surely that couldn\u2019t happen in 1990.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Wrong.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">As of right now, that crime continues unimpeded. But there\u2019s a development on the horizon\u2014the story isn\u2019t finished yet.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Did that situation change how you view the music industry?<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Not really. I had already heard stories about how artists were treated years earlier. I just thought I was protected.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I signed a contract like my contemporaries, and none of them got juxed, so I figured I was good. I knew the industry could be shady, but I saw a lot of cats navigating it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I thought the worst thing I had to deal with was a bad deal with my own label.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Who expects another label to come in, take your product, and do whatever they want with it?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">That might be a one-of-one situation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">How did it feel having\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Black Gold<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0sit unreleased for years?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Black Gold<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0is a bogus album. I never intended to release it. It\u2019s a cobbled-together fabrication made without my input.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Some of the songs were recorded years apart with different producers. One man had access to the material because we were discussing doing an album for his label. I wanted to re-record some of the songs, and others might never have been released at all.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We couldn\u2019t reach an agreement. A few years later, suddenly\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Black Gold<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0was on iTunes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I was just as surprised as anyone to see a \u201cnew\u201d Chill Rob G album.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I\u2019ve gone back and forth with the guy. He said someone stole the files from him. But if I entrust you with my valuables, you can\u2019t come back saying, \u201cSorry, Joe Blow stole it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">You need to get it back from Joe.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Until then, I\u2019m on your head about it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Returning with\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/chill-rob-g-empires-crumble\/\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Empires Crumble<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u2014 what did that moment mean to you?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I was happy to be back in the driver\u2019s seat of my stolen car.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Even though it had a few dings in it, it\u2019s mine. I built it from scratch and got it back\u2026The car I\u2019m talking about is my career, in case you missed it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I did record an EP called\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/chill-rob-g-chilled-not-frozen-e-p-featuring-r-a-the-rugged-man\/\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Chilled Not Frozen<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>.<\/strong><\/span> Shout-out to DJ Snafu for making that happen.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I wasn\u2019t sure if it made sense to continue beyond that EP in 2015. But in 2019 I ran into\u00a0Chuck D\u00a0at a party.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A few months later he texted me about working with C. Doc. This was during the pandemic lockdown, so it wasn\u2019t like I had other pressing business.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">So I said, \u201cLet\u2019s get it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Now here we are basically two albums deep.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Empires Crumble<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0came out in 2022, and this year we released\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Survival of the Better<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I like to rhyme. When the \u201cWho\u2019s your top five?\u201d conversations come up, after the usual names get mentioned, some hip-hop heads will say something like, \u201cYo, Chill Rob G is the most underrated rapper ever.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Honestly, I\u2019d prefer to be overrated\u2014but it is what it is.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I personally like the records I put out back then. I thought they were as good as everything else out there, better than some of it. But all I can do is create the jewels.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It\u2019s up to the listener to assign value to them.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">If everyone ignores the diamond, it\u2019s just a shiny rock.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">What should young artists understand about patience and respect in hip-hop?<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Young artists need to understand that if they\u2019re going to do this, they should love it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I wrote rhymes for years before anyone paid attention, and I was happy doing it. There was something cool about being the boxer who might drop the champ but nobody knows you yet.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">My rhyme partner and I used to go around \u201cbombing\u201d emcees.
