{"id":4515,"date":"2026-03-13T16:57:16","date_gmt":"2026-03-13T16:57:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/westcoastaftershock.com\/wca\/2026\/03\/chance-the-rapper-testifies-against-his-former-manager\/"},"modified":"2026-03-13T16:57:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T16:57:16","slug":"chance-the-rapper-testifies-against-his-former-manager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/westcoastaftershock.com\/wca\/2026\/03\/chance-the-rapper-testifies-against-his-former-manager\/","title":{"rendered":"Chance the Rapper Testifies Against His Former Manager"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Chance the Rapper took the stand against Pat Corcoran, his former manager, as their legal battle continues<\/p>\n<p>\u200bAccording to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/music\/2026\/03\/10\/chance-the-rapper-pat-corcoran-trial-lawsuit\">Chicago Sun-Times<\/a>, Chance wishes that he had fired Corcoran sooner than he did.<\/p>\n<p>\u200bCorcoran has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/music\/a\/backwoodsaltar\/chance-rapper-testifies-legal-battle-manager-pat-corcoran\">\u00a0alleged<\/a>\u00a0that Chance owes him $3 million in unpaid commissions after they went their separate ways in 2020. He also claims they had a \u201csunset clause\u201d which would give him a percentage of royalties until 2023. Corcoran said that \u00a0it \u201cwas a handshake deal and they never got the agreement in writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u200bWhen Change took the stand, he disputed all of Corcoran\u2019s claims.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u201dWe never described it as a contract until he sued me. And we had an at-will agreement that didn\u2019t address termination,\u201d Chance testified. \u00a0\u201cWe moved that way forever. We never discussed the sunset clause; we just discussed how I\u2019d pay him. And one thing that stayed consistent is that I paid him his 15 percent [in net proceeds]. \u2026 I kept paying him that 15 percent. I can\u2019t think of one situation where he did meaningful work, and I didn\u2019t pay him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u200bFrom 2012 to 2020, Chance claimed that he paid Corcoran $11 million as his manager. He added, \u201cdefinitely the person that got paid the most\u201d by Chance the Rapper LLC, his registered company.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u201dI probably should have fired him [sooner],\u201d Chance said.<\/p>\n<p>\u200bIn November 2020, Corcoran<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/chance-the-rappers-big-money-legal-battle-with-ex-manager-headed-to-trial1\/\">\u00a0filed\u00a0<\/a>the lawsuit against Chance. The lawsuit also included scathing comments about Chance\u2019s 2019 debut album,\u00a0<em>The Big Day<\/em>. He described it as \u00a0\u201csubpar\u201d and \u201clackluster.\u201d Also, he claimed Chance blamed him for the album\u2019s poor fan reception instead of acknowledging his own \u201clack of dedication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u200bResponding to the suit, Chance filed a countersuit the following year, seeking damages of $1 million and seeking to have the case dismissed.
