That early energy helped shape what the world now calls West Coast hip-hop, and at the center of that wave was Snake Puppy, co-architect of the legendary\u00a0L.A. Dream Team.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">This isn\u2019t just another rap story. This is about building something out of nothing \u2014 house studios, wires everywhere, ideas turning into records that still knock decades later. It\u2019s about innovation before recognition, wins and losses, brotherhood, evolution, and staying true while the game keeps changing. From shaping the electro-funk bounce that helped open doors for artists like\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/tag\/dr-dre\/\"><strong>Dr. Dre<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/tag\/snoop-dogg\/\"><strong>Snoop Dogg<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, to navigating loss, legacy, and a new era of technology, Snake Puppy\u2019s journey is real West Coast history. After this interview was conducted Snake Puppy put together a dope track for this interview (see below)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Looking back to 1985\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We weren\u2019t thinking about legacy. We were thinking about creating something fresh. We had a drum machine, ideas, and confidence. That was enough. The mission was simple \u2014 make records people would remember.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The early electro-hop blend\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">That sound was already moving in L.A. \u2014 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/rapindustry.com\/tag\/egyptian-lover\/\"><strong>Egyptian Lover<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, World Class Wreckin\u2019 Cru, Uncle Jamm\u2019s Army. The electronic funk was strong in the clubs. The drum machines felt futuristic.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">For us, it really showed up on \u201cRockberry Jam\u201d\u00a0and \u201cThe Dream Team Is in the House.\u201d The difference was melody. A lot of records were straight rhythm-driven. We focused on hooks you could sing, harmonies that stayed with you, and real arrangement. We weren\u2019t just looping beats \u2014 we were building songs. That musical layer helped those records last.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u201cThe Dream Team Is in the House!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When I heard that record playing somewhere we weren\u2019t even present, that\u2019s when it hit. The music had its own legs. That\u2019s when it felt real.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Losing Rudy in 1998\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">That wasn\u2019t just a group change. That was my friend. Losing him shifted everything. Every time I step into something creative, that history is with me.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Changes in the group\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We lost Lisa Love. We lost Rudy Pardee. We lost J-Kul. We lost General Jeff. That\u2019s not business \u2014 that\u2019s people I built with.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When you lose that many from your original circle, you don\u2019t just keep performing like nothing changed. The group was all of us. The chemistry was all of us.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Performing under that name without them didn\u2019t feel right. I respect what we created too much to treat it casually. That chapter stands as it was.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Kings of the West Coast \/ Bad to the Bone<\/span><\/span><\/em><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">That project was different. It wasn\u2019t produced by Courtney Branch and Tracy Kendricks \u2014 the producers behind \u201cRockberry Jam\u201d and \u201cThe Dream Team Is in the House.\u201d That production chemistry mattered.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Without that original team, the sound shifted. The album didn\u2019t connect the way we expected. That\u2019s just being honest.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It showed me how important the right production partnership is. Some combinations create something special that can\u2019t just be recreated.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Transition to production \/ video\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I wanted to understand more than just the mic. Production, visuals, ownership \u2014 all of it matters. Learning that side of the business gave me longevity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The rise of Gangsta rap\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">By the time that movement got strong, I had already stepped away from the group. Rudy teamed up with some fellas and formed the DBS Mob. They leaned into a harder direction and tried to move in that lane.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">That was their decision. Every artist chooses their path.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The West Coast was evolving, and different styles were finding space. I\u2019ve always believed identity matters more than switching directions just because the sound around you changes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Advice to my younger self\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Own your masters. Read every contract carefully. Loyalty is important, but paperwork protects you. And trust your instincts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Behind-the-scenes story\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u201cRockberry Jam\u201d\u00a0and \u201cThe Dream Team Is in the House\u201d\u00a0didn\u2019t come out of a big commercial studio. They came out of a house studio \u2014 a real house setup. Equipment in a room, wires everywhere, making it work.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">No fancy budget. No label environment. Just creativity and focus. We were shaping melodies, tightening hooks, running parts back until it felt right.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">People hear those records and assume it was some major production situation. It wasn\u2019t. It was built in a house with intention. That\u2019s part of why it still feels authentic.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Impact on today\u2019s artists\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When I hear melody blended with bounce in West Coast music today, I hear pieces of what we contributed. We helped expand what that sound could be.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">What keeps you creating\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It\u2019s part of who I am. Music gives direction and clarity. As long as I\u2019m here, I\u2019m creating.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">What\u2019s next\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">AI music is here. Some people shy away from it \u2014 I don\u2019t.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I love music, but I\u2019m not sitting here pretending to be a traditional musician. I use tools. Right now, that tool is Suno. And it works.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">To me, it\u2019s no different than when drum machines changed everything. Technology moves forward. The key is how you use it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I still care about melody. I still care about arrangement. I still care about feel. AI doesn\u2019t replace creativity \u2014 it responds to it.
