That\u2019s exactly what happened on a special live episode of Mind the Game in Hollywood, where LeBron James, Steve Nash, and Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet got together for a wide-ranging conversation about what it really takes to excel at the highest level.<\/p>\n

The episode blended hoops talk with Hollywood insight, as Chalamet\u2014a lifelong basketball fan\u2014compared the craft of acting with the discipline and preparation that elite athletes bring to the court.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, the competitive side is keeping me grounded, I feel like,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd to that extent, I mean, how many road maps in front of me are really healthy to look at? I would say few.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The actor explained that while Hollywood has plenty of examples to study, not all of them end well \u2014 something that motivates him to carve out his own path.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could see a lot of road maps, you know, heroes of mine that don\u2019t end in a particularly put together form,\u201d he said with a laugh before jokingly dodging Nash\u2019s request to name names.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He also admitted that he sometimes envies the camaraderie that comes with team sports.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI feel like again that\u2019s why I\u2019m envious in sports because you have the camaraderie of the locker room,\u201d Chalamet said. \u201cThe high pressure stakes of Hollywood and you see people crack\u2026 it\u2019s almost like people are anticipating that sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

For him, staying focused on goals \u2014 rather than indulgence or paranoia about losing success \u2014 is the key to navigating that world.<\/p>\n

\u201cI see two traps,\u201d he explained. \u201cOne is a life of indulgence\u2026 The other trap is like paranoia. Like I\u2019m going to hold on to what I have for dear life because I don\u2019t want to. But I\u2019m in the middle path\u2026 I want to keep shining and building and going forth.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Acting Like an Athlete<\/h3>\n

Later in the conversation, Nash asked a question that any sports fan might wonder about: how exactly does an actor train the way athletes do?<\/p>\n

\u201cTake me back to like you get the role and now like how do you become Bob Dylan?\u201d Nash asked. \u201cWhat does trying to add something to your game look like for an actor?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Chalamet said the process isn\u2019t as simple as watching other movies for inspiration.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s less looking at movies and more looking at real life,\u201d he explained. \u201cJack Fisk\u2026 says he never pulls from another movie because you\u2019re already pulling down. You\u2019re pulling from watered down life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Instead, the real challenge \u2014 especially between projects \u2014 is maintaining the discipline to stay mentally and physically healthy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like the offseason for an actor is you don\u2019t destroy yourself,\u201d Chalamet said bluntly. \u201cThat\u2019s how low the requirement is and how high the stakes are.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The actor admitted that taking care of himself hasn\u2019t always been easy, but moving to Los Angeles and adopting a healthier routine helped him lock in on his work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really like I got this rare gift\u2026 to be working on projects at the highest level,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I want to seize it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Chalamet also pointed to the legendary work ethic of Kobe Bryant as a major inspiration for how he approaches his craft.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat Kobe stuff doesn\u2019t happen with him partying,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s why I took that approach on Marty Supreme, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The actor explained that when everyone involved in a project is sacrificing to make something special, it only makes sense to go all out.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we\u2019re all taking pay cuts to be here, we might as well like really go extremely hard and be very intentional about what we\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Hoops, Movies, and a Full-Circle Moment<\/h3>\n

The episode also featured some lighter moments. Chalamet geeked out about the NBA, talked about growing up a fan of the New York Knicks, and even broke down a scene from Dune: Part Two while the group watched it together.<\/p>\n
