The United States and Israel launched a large-scale military assault on Iran early Saturday, marking what officials describe as a significant escalation in U.S. involvement against the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n

In an eight-minute video posted to Truth Social, President Donald Trump confirmed the operation.<\/p>\n

\u201cA short time ago, the United States military began major combat operations in Iran,\u201d Trump said. \u201cOur objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

AP further reports<\/a> that some of the first explosions appeared to strike areas near the compound of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran. Iranian state media cited by AP said more than 200 people were killed nationwide, and smoke was seen rising from the capital.<\/p>\n

However, in a nationally televised address reported by AP, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, \u201cThere are growing signs that the tyrant is no longer alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a phone interview with NBC News cited by AP,<\/a> Trump said regarding reports of Khamenei\u2019s death,<\/p>\n

\u201cWe feel that that is a correct story,\u201d and added that \u201cmost\u201d of Iran\u2019s senior leadership is \u201cgone.\u201d<\/p>\n

An anchor on Iranian State Television announced the Supreme Leader\u2019s death at the age of 86:<\/p>\n

Although the AP reported citizens seen cheering at the news, the Iranian cabinet vowed \u201cgreat crime will never go unanswered.\u201d The Revolutionary Guard released a statement treatening \u201ca severe, decisive and regret-inducing punishment\u201d and \u201cthe most-intense offensive operation\u201d targeting U.S. and Israel bases in the region.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Iran Retaliates With Missiles And Drones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Associated Press reports <\/a>that hours after the U.S. and Israeli strikes, Iran launched missiles and drones toward Israel and U.S. military bases in the region.<\/p>\n

According to the U.S. military, cited by AP, there have been no American casualties so far and minimal damage from the retaliatory strikes.<\/p>\n

AP also reports <\/a>that Iran has formally called on the United Nations Security Council to \u201ctake immediate action in response to this breach of international peace and security.\u201d Iranian officials further warned that U.S. bases and facilities in the region would be considered \u201clegitimate military objectives.\u201d<\/p>\n

In one of the most striking moments of his address, Trump directly appealed to the Iranian public.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow is the time to seize control of your destiny,\u201d he said. \u201cTake over your government.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also warned Iranian military and security forces to \u201clay down your weapons and have complete immunity. Or \u2026 face certain death.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to AP,<\/a> Trump framed the operation as both a national security mission and an opportunity for internal change within Iran.<\/p>\n
